These 2022 Queen Elizabeth II Memorial BU 50p Coins are issued by the Royal Mint. This coin pays homage to the late Queen Elizabeth II by featuring a reverse design taken from the 1953 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Crown

These coins are some of the first UK coins to feature King Charles III on the obverse. This new design is by British sculptor, Martin Jennings.

These base metal coins are struck to a brilliant uncirculated finish. Each coin comes issued in a presentation folder.

Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at Balmoral on 8th September 2022. The news broke around 6:30pm BST as messages of condolences from world leaders flooded in.

The state funeral took place at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19th September. She was laid to rest at St. George's Chapel, alongside her late husband, Prince Philip, her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and her sister, Princess Margaret.

King Charles III

Upon the death of his mother, the crown automatically passed to Prince Charles, who assumed the title of King Charles III.

The Accession Council proclaimed him king on Saturday 10th September 2022. His coronation will not be held until 2023.

Obverse

The obverse features the new coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. The king is shown facing left, the opposite of Queen Elizabeth II's right-facing portrait. The Latin inscription reads:

• CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 50 PENCE

The initials stand for "DEI GRATIA REGINA FIDEI DEFENSOR", meaning "BY THE GRACE OF GOD, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH".

Reverse

Taken from the 1953 Coronation Crown, the reverse shows a crown in the centre of an emblematical cross. It is formed from a thistle, rose, leek and shamrock. The four shields bear the arms of Scotland, England, and Ireland.

It was designed by artist, Edgar Fuller and modelled by sculptor, Cecil Thomas.
