Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Alexander Graham Bell

2022 marks 100 years since the death of Scottish-born scientist and inventor, Alexander Graham Bell. Born in 1847, he is best known for patenting the first telephone, revolutionising the way in which we communicate.

Showing an interest in problem solving from an early age, Bell's first invention was a dehusking machine for a flour mill. Bell then turned his interests to the science of sound, and, together with his assistant, Thomas A. Watson, the pair set about creating the first telephone

On 10th March 1876, the first successful telephone call took place. Bell was able to communicate the words “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you" to Watson, who was stood in an adjoining room.

Bell died in 1922 at the age of 75. There are numerous honours and tributes to Bell, including awards named after him, statues, museums, and now coins!

The word 'telephone' derives from Greek words meaning "distant voice".

Obverse

The obverse features Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscription reads:

ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS ·

Reverse

Designed by Henry Gray, the reverse shows the telephone buttons 0-9. The bottom two buttons show Bell's birth year (1847) and the year of his death (1922). The words ‘PIONEER OF THE TELEPHONE’ are inscribed on the buttons. The words 'ALEXANDER' and 'GRAHAM BELL' appear on the left and right side respectively.
