This is the 2021 Sir Walter Scott £2 Coin. The Privy Council have released the proclamation that The Royal Mint intend to release the 2021 dated coin.

The coin will be issued to celebrate the 250th anniversary of since the birth of the Scottish playwright and poet.

250th Anniversary of the Birth of Sir Walter Scott

Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish playwright and poet, known for establishing the historial fiction genre. His notable works include The Lady of the Lake and The Tale of Old Mortality.

Scott wrote a three volume series of historical stories called The Waverly Novels, one of which featured a version of Robin Hood which influenced our modern concept of the hero. In it, the outlaw is portrayed as a nobleman named Locksley. The alias 'Robin of Locksley' is still used to this day.

Scotts work helped anglicise and popularise the word 'glamour' which originated from the old Scottish word 'gramarye', meaning a magic enchantment.

Obverse

The obverse will feature the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

Reverse

According to the proclamation, the reverse will feature:

a depiction of Sir Walter Scott accompanied by the inscription “SIR WALTER SCOTT NOVELIST HISTORIAN POET” encircled by the inscription “250TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH” and the date of the year. The coin shall have a grained edge and in incuse letters the inscription “THE WILL TO DO, THE SOUL TO DARE”
