This is the 2021 John Logie Baird 50 Pence Coin. The Privy Council have released the proclamation that The Royal Mint intend to release the 2021 dated coin. This coin could possibly be the latest entry into the Innovation In Science Series.
We suspect the coin may commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the authors death.
We will update this page when we have further information.
Scottish inventor and engineer John Logie Baird helped create the first television set in 1926. Born in 1888, Baird showed an affinity for inventing from an early age by setting up a makeshift telephone exchange for him and his friends.
Baird's first television set incorporated household items such as scissors, sewing needles and a hatbox. Throughout his life Baird explored long range transmissions, and successfully transmitted the first transatlantic broadcast from London to New York. He also pinoeered the way with colour TV and even made the first 3D television.
Whilst it's hard to imagine life without television, early sceptics believed that "instantaneous transmission of a picture" was dreamt up by a mad man!
The obverse of the coin will feature the Jody Clark fifth coinage effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
According to the Privy Council Proclamation, the reverse will feature:
the inscription “JOHN LOGIE BAIRD TELEVISION PIONEER” accompanied by a depiction of a television mast emitting circular radio waves with a range of dates relating to John Logie Baird and the dates “1888” and “1946” aside the mast.
