New Security Features

The 2021 Britannia coins are the first to feature some new, high-tech security features from The Royal Mint.

The coins feature micro-text, a latent image, tincture lines and surface animation to ensure they are some of the most visually secure bullion coins on the market.

Gold Britannias

Gold bullion Britannia coins are the UK's most popular CGT exempt gold coin. Britannias were introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987. These British gold half bullion coins have a face value of £50.

Between 1987 - 2012, the coins were struck in 22 carat gold (0.9167 fineness); from 2013 onwards, the coins have been struck in 24 carat gold (0.9999 fineness). We have other gold coins available at very low premiums over spot gold price.

What Is Capital Gains Tax?

Capital gains tax exempt refers to the exclusion or avoidance of taxes on profits made from the sale of certain assets, such as bullion.

Fifth Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II

Wanting to “create a more positive look on the Queen”, Jody created many initial drawings of Elizabeth II, using photos taken of the Queen for sculptures. Taking two weeks to create the submitted design, Jody settled for a “warm expression”, revealing a new side to the regal figure whilst paying homage to her milestone of becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history by showing Elizabeth II adorning her coronation crown.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin shows the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth coinage portrait to be used on UK coins.

The text reads:

ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 50 POUNDS

Reverse

The reverse of the coin shows the iconic 'standing Britannia' image by Philip Nathan.

BRITANNIA 2021 1/2 oz 999.9 FINE GOLD

This 2021 coin has the addition of new security features. These include a small latent image on the bottom-left. Acting as a hologram, it changes between a trident and a padlock, depending on the angle the coin is held.

A small micro-text border can be seen around Britannia. It says "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which translates to “an ornament and a safeguard".

The field now features surface animation - micro-waves which create lines, showing a pattern in the background. Tincture lines have also been added to show colours and patterns on the metal.
