This is the 2021 H. G. Wells Two Pound Coin. The Privy Council have released the proclamation that The Royal Mint intend to release the 2021 dated coin.

We suspect the coin may commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the authors death.

The coin will show "depiction of the Invisible Man and a Martian encircled by clock numerals accompanied by the inscription “H.G. WELLS” and the date of the year." The edge text will read “GOOD BOOKS ARE THE WAREHOUSES OF IDEAS".

H. G. Wells

Science Fiction author Herbert George Wells was born in 1866. His best known works include The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, and The Time Machine.

Mostly set in futuristic, utopian society, Wells foresaw the invention of space travel, satellite television, planes and even the internet! His novels were so popular that he was nominated for the Nodel Prize in Literature four times!

In 1938, a dramatic adaptation of War of the Worlds was perfomed on US radio. Narrated by Orson Wells, the feature was set up as a news bulletin. Despite disclaimers being made prior to the show, it still caused a mass panic with unsuspecting listeners who had tuned in midway. There were even reports of people fleeing their homes, although the scale of panic may have been exaggerated by newspapers,

Obverse

The obverse of the coin will feature the Jody Clark coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Reverse

According to the Privy Council Proclamation, the reverse will feature the following:-

A depiction of the Invisible Man and a Martian encircled by clock numerals accompanied by the inscription “H.G. WELLS” and the date of the year. The coin shall have a grained edge and in incuse letters the inscription “GOOD BOOKS ARE THE WAREHOUSES OF IDEAS”.
