The 2020 Gold Proof Half Sovereign is the smallest of the 2020 sovereigns to be released individually, with the mint only issuing the proof quarter coins as part of the 2020 sovereign coin sets.

These 2020 half sovereigns feature a special cypher mint mark on the reverse. This is to commemorate the 200th anniversary since the death of King George III. The coins comes in a wooden presentation case and is issued with a certificate of authenticity from The Royal Mint.

The Modern Sovereign

The modern sovereign was introduced in 1817 and has been issued most years since. The coins continue to be highly sought after by investors and collectors alike.

Proof Coins

These proof coins are struck to a much higher standard than bullion coins. The blanks are struck up to 6 times each in order to give the coins the very best finish.

Obverse

The obverse of the coins feature the Jody Clark fifth coinage effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

The text reads:

Reverse

The reverse shows the iconic St. George and the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci. This design has been used since 1817 on the reverse of most dates of Sovereigns, with a few exceptions.

In order to make the dies reflect the original design, the Royal Mint have digitally remastered them using the original tooling.

To the left of the date you can find a royal cypher mint mark. This commemorates the 200th year since the death of King George III.
