This is the 2020 Celebration of the Reign of King George III £5 coin as issued by The Royal Mint. This brilliant uncirculated coin comes displayed in a colourful presentation folder.

This coin marks the first time King George III has been celebrated on modern UK coinage.

200 Years Since the Death of King George III

King George III reigned from 1760 until his death in 1820. During this time the modern sovereign coin was introduced, the US claimed independence from the British, and Great Britain and Ireland became formerly known as the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland".

George studied science and his fascination with the stars led to him commissioning The Kings Observatory (also known as the Kew Observatory). Upon it's completion in 1769, the King was able to watch the transit of Venus, an event which happens twice at 8-year intervals, and then does not occur for around 120 years. The same event was also studied by Captain James Cook who had travelled to Tahiti to study the event.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin was designed by Jody Clark. It is the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by The Royal Mint graphic designer, Dominique Evans. The "bull head" portrait of George III (designed by Benedetto Pistrucci) takes centre position, with items representing his life and interests around him.

The floral symbols appear in each corner; the rose of England, leek of Wales, thistle of Scotland and the shamrock of Northern Ireland.

The George III cypher mark appears at the bottom. This is also used on the 2020 Proof Sovereigns

Dominique's other designs include the 2017 Jane Austen £2 coin
