The 2019 Moon Landing 50th Anniversary 1 oz Gold Perth Mint Australian Bullion Coins commemorate the successful landing of American spacecraft, Apollo 11’s Lunar Module Eagle, landing on the moon in 1969.
These coins had a maximum mintage figure of 15,000 coins, however only 5,297 were actually produced.
The Apollo 11 mission is widely considered a historic achievement that saw human beings land on the moon for the first time in history. Launched on July 16, 1969, the mission involved astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins aboard the Saturn V rocket. After a four-day journey, Armstrong and Aldrin successfully landed the Lunar Module Eagle on the moon's surface, while Collins remained in orbit.
Armstrong's iconic statement, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," marked a pivotal moment in space exploration and firmly established the United States' leadership in the space race with the Soviet Union.
The obverse design features the Australian effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Jody Clark. The portrait is surrounded by the following inscriptions:
ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1oz 9999 Au 2019 100 DOLLARS
The reverse of the coin, which was designed by Lucas Bowers, features a representation of Apollo 11's Lunar Module Eagle, alongside a footprint on the lunar surface that symbolises the monumental accomplishment of humans landing on the moon. The reverse also features a inscription that reads as:
MOON LANDING 1969-2019
