Apollo 11

The Apollo 11 mission (16th–24th July 1969) was the first succesful attempt to land humans on the Moon. Crewed by Commander Neil Armstrong, lunar module pilot "Buzz" Aldrin and command module pilot Michael Collins, the successful landing proved the United State's victory over the Soviet Union in the space race.

After landing the Lunar Module "Eagle", Armstrong would take the first human steps on the moon with Aldrin joining him 19 minutes later. After spending around 2 hours and 15 minutes on the lunar surface, Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the module taking with them around 21.5kg of sample materials before resting and finally returning to the command module Columbia which Michael Collins was piloting.

Columbia splashed down in the Western Pacific on 24th July.

Celebrations occured in many cities across the US including parades in New York and Chicago, and an official state dinner in Los Angeles. A 38-day world tour sent the astronauts to 22 foreign countries around the world.

Michael Collins passed away at the age of 90 on 20th April 2021.

Obverse

The obverse features Jody Clark's portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
