The 2019 Gold Proof Maple Royal Canadian Mint 4 Coin Set.
This gold proof maple leaf coin set celebrates 40 years of the Maple coin.
All four coins are .9999 fine gold and share the same reverse design by Nathalie Lagacé which shows 3 different sizes of maple leaves overlapping.
The 1 oz coin also features the edge lettering "05.09.79" which denotes the date of the first release of the gold maple leaf, 5th September 1979.
Canada was the first country to introduce a "pure" gold bullion coin, the maple or maple leaf.
One distinctive feature of the maple is that it is made of pure gold ( .999 or .9999 fine), rather than 22 carat (.9167 fine). This means a maple is smaller and lighter than a Krugerrand.
For circulating coins, pure gold would be too soft to be sufficiently durable, but it has a beautiful colour, and being of higher density, also has a higher quality heft or "feel".
The obverse features Arnold Machin's portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II and bears the inscription:
ELIZABETH II • D • G • REGINA
It also has their respective face values.
The reverse features Nathalie Lagacé's design of 3 overlapping maple leaves.
The reverse of the coins also their gold content and the privy marks:
