2019 Gold Proof 50th Anniversary of the Guernsey & Jersey 50p Coin Set.

This gold proof coin set commemorates the introduction of the 50p coin in Jersey and Guernsey in 1969.

These coins are struck in 22-carat gold and feature the same design featured on the original 50p coins issued in each Crown Dependency.

This coin set is number 20 of only 50 sets issued.

History of the 50p Coin

First issued in 1969, the 50 pence replaced the 10-shilling note becoming the third decimal coin introduced British currency. Despite its introduction in the late 1960s, the coins heritage can be traced far before this, with silver half pound coins being issued around 1559 and 1646, and the still popular half sovereign coming to fruition in 1544. Both Jersey and Guernsey introduced the 50p coin at the same time as the United Kingdom.

Unusual Shape

What set the 50 pence apart was its heptagonal shape which was a unique trait, rarely found within British coinage at the time, until the circulation of the 20 pence in 1982.

Obverse

The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Reverse

The reverse design on the Guernsey design features a Ducal cap which was worn by the Duke of Normandy.

The Jersey coin features the Jersey Coat of Arms.

Cancellations & Returns:
Once you place an order, you cannot cancel it. We do not currently accept returns, however. You may be able to sell your investment products back to Chards at the current buy back rate.
