This 2019 Silver Proof Fifty Pence coin celebrates the 50th anniversary of the iconic coin. First issued in 1969, this coin features the original reverse design by Christopher Ironside, as well as a special privy mark.
The coins have a limited edition presentation of just 3,500.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, this coin uses the iconic seated Britannia on the reverse. This appeared on the original coins. The coin also has a privy mark on the reverse to commemorate the event.
Interestingly, this 2019 fifty pence coin is the same specification as current fifty pence coins. When the coin was first issued it was larger (30mm) and weighed more (13.5g) than the current coins. In 1997 the coin was changed to be 27.3mm and 8g.
The obverse shows the fifth coinage effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
The reverse was designed by Christoper Ironside and shows the iconic seated Britannia. She is shown with a shield on one side and a lion on the other. The coin uses the original text:
A special privy mark is featured which symbolises the science behind the 7-sided coins shape.
