The sovereign is one of Britain's most famous gold coins. The sovereign first made an appearance in the reign of Henry VII as a hammered gold coin in 1489 with a value of one pound. After the reformation of British coinage in 1816, the modern sovereign was introduced in 1817 and has become a favourite with collectors and investors all over the world.
The 2018 sovereign is issued in a variety of finishes and sizes. This 2018 proof quarter sovereign is a popular choice as a gift to mark a special occasion or for coin collectors who like to collect the proof quarter sovereigns from every year.
The obverse shows the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark.
The reverse design features St George, slaying the dragon. This was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, and has been used on sovereigns since 1817.
The reverse also includes the addition of a crown mint mark, found to the left of the date. The privy mark commemorates the Sapphire Anniversary (65 years) of the Queen's coronation.
