World War I

The Great War lasted for over 4 years, from 28th July 1914 to 11th November 1918.

After the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie; a month of diplomatic talks between Britain, France, Russia, Germany and Austria-Hungary took place.

Serbia, whose officials were involved in the Archduke's assassination, provoked Austria-Hungary into a war by declaring a general mobilisation of troops. The talks broke down and Austria-Hungary ordered a partial mobilisation and a day later on the 28th of July 1914, declared war on Serbia. Russia entered the fray followed shortly by Germany. Germany declared war on France on 3rd August with Britain entering the war a day later.
