This sovereign will be struck on 1st July, 2017, the 200th anniversary of the 1817 proclamation that revived the sovereign.

This BU sovereign is issued with a plain edge and has a mintage of just 1,817. The coins will only be issued as individual coins in a presentation box with a certificate of authenticity and will not appear in any coin sets.

Obverse

The obverse features the fifth definitive UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, his initials JC are below the truncation. This is the first time since 1887 that the date has been featured on the obverse of the coin. The obverse legend reads ELIZABETH II·DEI·GRA·REG·FID·DEF·2017

Reverse

Benedetto Pistrucci's original St George and the Dragon design has been remastered to commemorate it's 200th anniversary. First issued in 1817, the design features a garter border with the inscription HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense

The garter inscription on the St. George and the Dragon reverse reads "Honi soit qui mal y pense", which is French for "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it". This is the motto of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the UK.
