2017 is the 200th anniversary of the first modern sovereign. To celebrate, The Royal Mint have remastered the original 1817 St George and the Dragon design. This design appears on all of the 2017 proof sovereigns.
The reverse design features the garter with the inscription. This has not been used on sovereigns since 1820.
The garter inscription on the St. George and the Dragon reverse reads "Honi soit qui mal y pense", which is French for "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it".
This is the motto of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the UK.
The proof quarter sovereigns have a mintage figure of 5,100, however this includes the proof quarter sovereigns being issued as parts of sets. The coins have a limited edition presentation figure of 2,500, meaning no more than 2,500 coins will be issued in their individual boxes.
We received our stock on 11th November, 2016.
Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of the coin. For the first time since 1887, the date is also featured on the obverse.
The reverse features a remastered version of the St George and the Dragon design. The Benedetto Pistrucci design first appeared on sovereigns in 1817. The 2017 coin features the original garter border, which is the first time it has appeared on sovereigns since 1820.
