Tristan da Cunha

Named after Tristao da Cunha who discovered the island in 1506, it has only been inhabited since 1810. The island is a volcano which erupted in 1961, with the entire population of about 300 islanders evacuating. Between the years of 1962 and 1963, the majority of the population returned to the live on the island. Popularly referred to as the 'world's most remote inhabited island', around 240-250 people live in its main settlement to this day.

On August 5th 1867 HRH Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh visited the island, and its only village was named Edinburgh in his honour.
