Gold Krugerrands are produced by the Rand Refinery and the South African Mint. First issued in 1967, the Krugerrand became the most traded one ounce gold coin in the 1980s. The success of this gold bullion coin encouraged major mints all over the world to issue their own 1 oz gold coins.

In the US PCGS stands for "Professional Coin Grading Service" and is marketed as the "standard for the rare coin industry". Dating back to the 80's it was a recognition that the industry needed a standard approach to grading scores and descriptions. The grading follows the Sheldon framework described below under NGC grading.
PCGS employs a numeric grading system to concisely depict the condition of a coin without any issues. This internationally recognised scale, established in the 1940s, spans from 1 to 70, encompassing various available numeric grades. As the numeric grade ascends, it indicates an enhanced condition of the coin.
PCGS defines a MS/PR-68 grade as:
"Only the slightest weakness in strike with a few tiny imperfections barely visible".
The obverse of the Krugerrand features a portrait of Paul Kruger. It was designed by Otto Schultz. The text reads in Afrikaans and English:
SUID-AFRIKA·SOUTH AFRICA
The reverse bears the iconic springbok antelope, the national animal of South Africa. The coin bears the inscription:
