China issued its first gold panda bullion coin in 1982. The panda changes every year on the reverse, which makes gold panda bullion coins popular worldwide due to being very collectible.

Grams or Troy Ounces?

Most major global mints issue coins in imperial weights, however, the People's Bank of China use metric weights. The gold Pandas are usually measured in troy ounces however starting with the 2016 coins, they will now be measured in grams.

This is thought to be so the Chinese mint can market the coins in grams and kilos within China. The new sizes (in grams) are 30, 15, 8, 3 and 1 and are roughly equivalent to one, half, quarter, tenth and twentieth ounce coins respectively.
