More Info

For the first time in over 100 years, there were two designs for the sovereign in one year. The earlier proof coins featured the fourth portrait, by Ian Rank-Broadley, on the obverse, whilst proof sovereigns produced after 2nd March, 2015, featured Jody Clark's fifth portrait of Elizabeth II. This coin is struck in 22 carat gold and comes in a wooden presentation box with a certificate of authentication.

Obverse

The obverse of the sovereign features the fifth definitive UK coin portrait of the Queen designed by Royal Mint engraver, Jody Clark. The engraver's initials JC are under the curved trunacted neck. This portrait shows a rather more mature monarch wearing the King George IV State Diadem. The fifth effigy was revealed on 2nd March, 2015.

Reverse

The iconic St George and Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci can be seen on the reverse of the coin. This design had dominated the reverse of the sovereign gold coin since the introduction of the first modern sovereign in 1817. The date and the engraver's initials B.P. are in exergue under the main design.
