This is the 2014 Year of the Horse 1 oz Gold Proof Coin issued by Australia's Perth Mint.

This Chinese Lunar coin celebrates the 7th animal in the zodiac calendar, the horse. Struck from 999.9 fine gold (24 carat) and issued to a proof finish. Each coin comes in a presentation box.

These coins originally had a maximum mintage figure of 5,000 however only 748 of the coins were produced.

Lunar Year of the Horse

The Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on a 12 year cycle, each year in the cycle is associated with a different animal.

The horse is the seventh animal in the series. Those born under it are thought to be full of energy, athletic and motivated by happiness.

The Year of the Horse began on the 31st January 2014 and ended 18th February 2015.

Obverse

The obverse shows the Ian Rank Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The text reads:

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Tom Vaughan. It shows a galloping horse with mountains in the background. The Chinese character for 'horse' appears at the top. The bottom reads:
