The 100th Anniversary of the First World War £2 is the first coin in a five-year series that takes us on a journey from outbreak to armistice.

Struck in 22 carat gold, the coin features a red gold outer band around a yellow gold inner disc. Designed by John Bergdahl, this commemorative gold proof two pound coin features an engraving on the reverse based upon the famous campaign poster of Lord Kitchener urging men to enlist. 'Your Country Needs You' resonated with men throughout the United Kingdom to sign up and fight for King and Country.

The coin features the edge inscription:

THE LAMPS ARE GOING OUT ALL OVER EUROPE

These words were spoken by the Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey on the eve of WWI.

Obverse

The obverse bears the fourth definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank Broadley, FRBS, FSNAD, whose initials IRB appear under the head.

The reverse features the image of British Secretary of War, Lord Kitchener, pointing and the inscription:
