Special Design Double Sovereigns

Since the introduction of the modern sovereign, Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic design of St George has appeared on almost every reverse of sovereigns. Some of the special designs on double sovereigns are the 1989 500th Anniversary sovereigns, the 2002 shield reverse sovereign, and the 2022 royal coats of arms double sovereigns.

PF-70 Grade

NGC defines a PF-70 grade as the following:

A coin with no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification. It is the highest grade possible.

Ultra Cameo Grading

Coins that are graded as Ultra Cameo means the obverse and reverse fields are deeply mirrored and the devices are heavily frosted.

What Is a Proof Coin?

A proof coin is a type of coin that is produced using a specific minting process that results in a highly polished surface and intricate design details. The coins are designed for collectors and investors who are interested in a high-quality product that showcases superior craftsmanship and minting quality.

Proof coins are typically produced in limited quantities and may feature unique packaging, certificates of authenticity, or other distinguishing characteristics that set them apart from standard coins. Due to their limited production and exceptional finish, proof coins generally command higher prices than regular coins of the same denomination and are highly prized by both collectors and investors.

Obverse

The obverse features the fourth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was sculpted by British Sculptor, Ian Rank-Broadley. The obverse includes an inscription that reads as:

ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA  REGINA · FID · DEF

Reverse

The reverse features the special design of St George slaying the dragon on the reverse, as designed by Paul Day. The coins include the initials "PJD", and the issue date "2012".
