When King Charles was executed in 1649, Britain was declared a Commonwealth. It was led by Oliver Cromwell until his death in 1658, after which his son Richard took over the role as Lord Protector.
In 1660, after the English Civil War, the system was abandoned in favour of a restored monarchy under Charles II.
The obverse features the crowned portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right. It was designed by Ian Rank Broadley whose initials can be found at the bottom of the coin.
ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · F · D · 2010
The reverse was designed by David Cornell. It features a Heraldic Crown with '1660' below. Entwined C's of Charles II appear amongst some roses and thistles.
