Sovereigns can be issued in a number of different sizes and finishes. The £5 quintuple sovereign is the largest size that is issued.
The quintuple gold five pounds, also known as the £5 coin, weighs five times the weight of a sovereign (39.94g) and contains 1.1771 troy ounces of gold. It has a diameter of 36.02 mm.
Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coins are newly minted coins that have never been in circulation. They are considered to be in better condition than typical 'normal' bullion coins but not as great as proof condition coins.
Collectors can expect to pay higher premiums for these coins from dealers due to their higher condition compared to bullion coins, but the premiums will be lower than those of proof condition coins.
Unsure of the mintage of your Quintuple Sovereigns? Our Quintuple Sovereign summary table on our blog page details all mintages from 1820 to 2022.
Way back in 1902, five pound gold coins were issued for circulation, but even then, they were probably mainly hoarded as curiosities and keepsakes as the modern cupro-nickel £5 crowns are nowadays.
In 1980 the Royal Mint started issuing gold £5 coins once again, although some dates were issued only as part of a 4 coin gold proof set, others were issued as proofs, some as uncirculated versions.
