2008 Royal Coat of Arms Gold Proof One Pound Coin In Capsule

This gold proof £1 coin marks the farewell of the Royal Coat of Arms design which appeared on the modern £1 coins from their introduction in 1983 until 2008. Designed by Eric Sewell, the Royal Coat of Arms design was replaced by the Royal Arms.

This pound coin is struck from 22 carat gold (0.9167 fineness) to a proof finish and comes in a protective capsule. The coin has a substantial weight of 19.619g which is almost three times the weight of a sovereign. The coin contains 0.578 troy ounces of gold.

Only 860 of these coins were minted.

2008 Royal Coat of Arms and Shield of Arms £1 Coin Designs

There were two different designs of £1 issued in 2008; one featuring the coat of arms and the other with the shield of arms.

Royal Coat of Arms

This 2008 coin is the last one pound to feature the Royal Coat of Arms design on the reverse. The Royal Coat of Arms was used on the modern one-pound coin when it entered circulation on 21st April 1983

Obverse

The obverse features the fourth definitive UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by British sculptor, Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.

Reverse

This 2008 gold one pound coin features the Royal Coat of Arms by Eric Sewell.

It shows a crown topped shield, flanked by the English lion and the Scottish unicorn. It is surrounded by the motto of the Order of the Garter "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" which is French for "EVIL BE TO HIM WHO EVIL THINKS THEREOF".
