This proof £2 coin celebrates the successful London 2012 bid and symbolises the Handover Ceremony which took place on the 24th August 2008 at the close of the Beijing Olympic Games. The first major event for London 2012 Olymics was the Closing Ceremonies of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. At each of these events there was a cermony to mark the official handover of the Games to the next host city. The Olympic Flag was passed from the Mayor of Beijing to Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, followed by a short performance which invited the world to London for the 2012 Olympic Games.
This 2008 £2 coin was issued in a number of different finishes. Uncirculated for circulation, Brilliant Uncirculated in presentation folder and as proof coins. The proof coins were issued as silver proof, silver proof piedfort and gold proof. These proof issues come in a presentation box with a certificate.
The edge bears the inscription:
I CALL UPON THE YOUTH OF THE WORLD.
The obverse bears the fourth definitive UK coin portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley with the inscription:
ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF
Designed by The Royal Mint Engraving Team, the reverse bears an engraving of the Olympic Flag and the London 2012 logo. The words "BEIJING 2008" and "LONDON 2012" surround the design along the outer ring.
