Highlights of The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics

The XXI Olympic Winter Games were held from February 12 to 28, 2010 in Vancouver, Canada, featuring 15 sports and over 2,600 athletes from 82 nations. Notably, Canadian athlete Alexandre Bilodeau made history by winning the country's first gold medal on home soil, while the tragic death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili during a training run left a sombre note.

The Origin of the Maple Leaf

The maple leaf has a rich history in Canada and was traditionally used by indigenous people for its medicinal properties. In 1965, this iconic symbol was officially declared as Canada's national emblem and has since become a representation of the country's natural beauty and national identity.

What is a Inukshuk?

The Inukshuk is a cultural symbol of the Inuit people and is used to mark significant places and routes across the Canadian Arctic. It is recognised as a symbol of Canada's northern heritage and has become a representation of the country's diverse cultural identity.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing towards the right at the age of 77. This elegant design is a tribute to Canada's longstanding ties with the British monarchy and is crafted with exceptional detail and precision. The portrait is encircled by the inscriptions:

ELIZABETH II

50 DOLLARS 2008

Reverse

The reverse design of features the iconic Canadian maple leaf with the Inukshuk - a symbol of Canada's indigenous culture - superimposed on it. This design beautifully combines natural elements with cultural heritage, making it a unique and valuable addition to any collection.

The inscription of the coin reads as:
