In 2006, the Cook Islands issued a gold proof $500 coin to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of Concorde. Struck in 24 carat gold, this commemorative coin is presented in a wooden presentation box with a certificate of authenticity.
This coin has an extremely low mintage, only 30 coins were issued to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Concorde.
Concorde was a British-French supersonic passenger jet that flew until 2003. Flying on Concorde was seen as a status symbol for many who aspired to be one of her passengers. The aircraft had a maximum speed which was more than twice the speed of sound. A typical flight from London to New York took less than three and a half hours. Concorde was withdrawn from flight on 24 October 2003.
