These 2005 Gold Proof Elizabeth II Nelson Pound £5 Crown Coins are a commemorative release by the Royal Mint issued to mark the bicentenary of the death of Horatio Nelson.
Horatio Nelson, born on 29th September 1758, was a highly esteemed British naval officer who is widely considered one of the greatest naval commanders in history. His pivotal role in the Napoleonic Wars, particularly his leadership during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, resulted in numerous victories for the British Royal Navy.
Unfortunately, Nelson sustained fatal injuries during the Battle of Trafalgar, but his profound legacy remains as a symbol of courage, loyalty, and unparalleled naval expertise in British history.
The obverse displays the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian-Rank Broadley.
