2001 Marconi Piedfort Silver Proof Two Pound Coin.

The Royal Mint issued this commemorative coin to celebrate the centenary of the first transatlantic wireless transmission.

This piedfort silver proof coin is struck from 0.925 sterling silver. It has a total silver weight of 0.7138 troy ounces.

Each of these commemorative coins comes issued in a presentation box, along with a certificate of authenticity from The Royal Mint.

There were 10,000 of these coins minted.

The coin catalogues in the 2017 Coins of England and the United Kingdom book for £60.

Guglielmo Marconi First Wireless Wransmission Across The Atlantic

This coin celebrates the first wireless transmission across the Atlantic. In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi accomplished the task, sending the Morse code for the letter 'S' from Poldhu in Cornwall, England, to Newfoundland, Canada. This breakthrough revolutionised communication throughout the world.

This coin was issued in 2001 in order to celebrate the centenary of his achievement.

Silver £2 Coins

The silver proof bimetallic two pound coins are often subject to light toning. The coin can appear 'cloudy', this is light toning which can develop into iridescent colouring which we find very attractive.

Obverse

The design on the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by artist, Robert Evans. It shows a representation of radio waves emanating from a source at the left of the coin, and spreading out around the date. A spark of electricity links the zeros of the date. the morse code for "S", three dots, has been incorporated into the design. This was the original signal sent from Cornwall to Newfoundland in 1901.

The edge is milled, and also has the incuse inscription:

"WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC MARCONI 1901"
