Who was Guglielmo Marconi?

Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian inventor that is best known for being the creator of the radio. Furthermore, he won the Nobel prize in physics in 1909 for his contribution to the development of wireless telegraphy.

Guglielmo Marconi First Wireless Wransmission Across The Atlantic

This coin celebrates the first wireless transmission across the Atlantic. In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi accomplished the task, sending the Morse code for the letter 'S' from Poldhu in Cornwall, England, to Newfoundland, Canada. This breakthrough revolutionised communication throughout the world.

This coin was issued in 2001 in order to celebrate the centenary of his achievement.

Obverse

The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's coinage portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, with a legend surrounding:

ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRA·REG·FID·DEF ·

Reverse

The reverse shows Marconi's wireless transmission, which took place in 1901. It was designed by the engraver Robert Evans, who trained at the Royal Mint before eventually becoming a senior engraver.

The design shows a representation of radio waves emanating from a source at the left of the coin, and spreading out around the date. A spark of electricity links the zeros of the date. The morse code for "S", three dots, has been incorporated into the design. This was the original signal sent from Cornwall to Newfoundland in 1901.
