The modern Britannia series was introduced in 1987 to match the bullion coins of the South African Krugerrand, and the Canadian Maple Leaf.
Since 1997, the Britannia series was extended to include a range of silver coins.
The image of Britannia on coins dates back nearly 2,000 years, when it first appeared on the coins of Roman Emperor Hadrian.
The Britannia series began in 1987 with a standing figure of Britannia which continued until 1996, returned again between 1998-2000 and again in 2002.
The 1997 coin features Britannia in a chariot and was struck to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the series.
An image of Britannia with a shield and trident alongside a lion appeared on the 2001 coin.
The 2003 coin depicts Britannia wearing a helmet defending Britain's shores.
The obverse features the image of HM Queen Elizabeth II by 2 different artists.
The 1987 and 1997 are the work of Raphael Maklouf, while the 2001 and 2003 feature the Ian Rank-Broadley portraits.
The reverse of all four designs are all by Philip Nathan who has developed the theme of the coins.
The coins designs are:
The Charioteer (1997, 1999, 2009)
Classic Standing Britannia
'Una and the Lion' Britannia (2001)
Britannia Helmet (2003)
