This 1994 two pound coin was issued to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Bank of England. This is one of the nickel brass coins which were issued between 1986 to 1996.
The reverse bears a seal with the figure of Britannia. Britannia had appeared on the coins, farthings and half pennies, of Charles II. She symbolises the power and might of Great Britain.
The motto of William Paterson, "SIC VOS NON VOBIS", "THUS WE LABOUR BUT NOT FOR OURSELVES" is inscribed around the edge of the coin.
The obverse of this coin bears Raphael Maklouf's acclaimed third definitive UK coin portrait of the Queen. The coin bears the inscription ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRATIA · REGINA · F·D · TWO POUNDS ·
The engraving on the reverse was created by Leslie Durbin. It bears the Bank's original corporate seal, the crown and cypher of William and Mary and the words Bank of England in familiar script.
