These 1992 Gold $100 Common Wallaroo Kangaroo Nugget 1 oz Bullion Coins are produced by the Perth Mint in Australia. They had a maximun mintage of 250,000, but only 111,922 were minted!
The reverse of the commemorative coin features a Common Wallaroo, designed by Alex Lumsden, and the obverse features Queen Elizabeth II 3rd portrait by Raphael David Maklouf.
A common Wallaroo is a species of the macropod family, native to Australia. They are smaller than a kangaroo but larger than a wallaby!
Each coin is struck from 0.9999 fineness (24-carat) and contains 1 troy ounce of the precious metal and has a face value of $100.
Common Wallaroo's share similar features to kangaroo's, such as strong hind legs and a long tail. They are predominately herbivourus an are well adapted to several habitats including rock terain. They can be found throughout Australia, but do not live in Tasmania.
Until 1990 the coins featured famous gold nuggets on the reverse and were referred to as 'nuggets'. From 1990 onwards the design changed to feature a kangaroo instead. For this reason the coins may be called nuggets, kangaroos or 'roos.
The third portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II was designed by Raphael David Maklouf and is featured on this obverse. The coin bears an inscription that reads as:
ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA · 100 DOLLARS
