The 1991 gold proof sovereign four coin collection features the third portrait of the Queen, as used from 1985 to 1997 inclusive on most British coins, but it is only the third 4 coin gold proof set, the first being 1985, to share this obverse design together with the classic Saint George and Dragon reverse design.
See the rest of the 1991 Sovereign Collection.
The only other four coin gold proof sets of the same type, with the Saint George and Dragon design and the third portrait, were issued in 1985, 1990, 1992, and 1993.
The issue quantity was less than a quarter of the 1985 issue. The issue limit placed on the 1991 set was 1,500 and only 1,336 were issued. There were 5,849 of the 1985 sets issued.
In 1990, the four coin gold proof set packaging was redesigned, and changed to a red leather box, and for the first time, a gold-plated medallion was including, with a crowned "Elizabeth R" above the date. The medallion included in the 1991 sets has a goat on the reverse to mark the Chinese lunar year of the goat.
The gold sovereigns in this set all feature the third definitive UK coin portrait of Elizabeth II by sculptor, Raphael Maklouf.
Benedetto Pistrucci first designed the engraving of St George and the dragon in 1817. It is featured on the reverse of all of the coins in this set.
