1990 Silver Henry Kelsey Canadian $1 Coin.
This Canadian silver dollar commemorates the 300th anniversary of Henry Kelsey's exploration of the Canadian Prairies.
The coin is struck in .500 silver fineness and is issued loose.
Henry Kelsey was an fur trader, explorer, and sailor who played an important role in establishing the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) and worked for them for nearly 40 years.
Kelsey is the first recorded European to have visited the present-day provinces of Saskatchewan and, possibly, Alberta, as well as the first to have explored the Great Plains from the north. He is best known for his two-year journey from Hudson Bay to the western interior between 1690 and 1692, which likely makes him the first European to see the Prairies.
The obverse features the Canadian portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
The reverse features a group of Westen Natives showing Kelsey a herd of buffaloes. It was designed by David Crag.
