1989 Spanish 80,000 Peseta Gold Proof Coin - Quinto Centenario.
This proof coin from Spain is part of a series of commemorative issues for the 'Quinto Centenario' (500th anniversary). You can read more on this in the 'More Info' section.
This proof coin is struck in 24 carat (.999) fine gold and is housed in a wooden box. It contains 0.8671 troy ounces of the precious metal.
It has a mintage figure of 6,994 coins.
We must admit to being slightly puzzled about this coin, but then our knowledge of Spanish history is not perfect or universal.
We know the Reconquista (reconquest of Spain from the Moors) officially ended in 1492 with the conquest of Granada, and that Christopher Columbus (an Italian) discovered America and a few other places along the way.
From the certificate which accompanies the coin, we know that it is part of a series of commemorative issues for the Quinto Centenario, minted in accordance with the Ministerial Order of 17-11-89, and that the 1989 coins are part of series I. We guess from this that the series continued for a number of years, but are still puzzled.
The lid of the wooden box is stamped 1492 - 1992, with a crowned "500", so we guess that the series ran from 1989 to 1992 inclusive. If and when we learn more, we will add it here, meanwhile, the coin is an attractive design.
