Pride of Australia

The Pride of Australia nugget was unearthed in 1981 at Wedderburn in Victoria, Australia. It weighed just over 7 kilograms and was bought by the State Bank of Victoria. The bank donated it to the state of Victoria to mark the 150th anniversary of the State's creation. It was later stolen in 1991 to never be seen again.

Why is the Nugget popular?

The Gold Nugget coin series was first introduced in 1986 as a competitor to other Countries coins such as the Maple, Krugerrand and Britannia. The Nugget series originally started with having famous gold nuggets discovered in Australia on the reverse. In 1989 they produced a nugget reverse design and a kangaroo reverse design. From 1990 onwards all proof and bullion designs now have a kangaroo on the reverse.

The Obverse features the Third Portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael David Maklouf.

The inscription reads:

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features the Pride of Australia.
