1988 Canadian Gold $100 Proof Bowhead Whale Coin.
The Canadian Mint issed this coin in 1988. The obverse of the coin shows Elizabeth II and the reverse depicts a bowhead whale and it's calf.
Struck in 14 carat gold (0.5833 fineness), this gold proof coin is one of a series of commemorative hundred dollar coins. Each coin is packaged in a leather wallet with "Canada" and the date gold embossed on its spine and a maple leaf emblem on the front.
This coin features one of the giants of the Arctic, the Bowhead whale with a calf. The Bowhead whale has a huge bow-shaped head which they use to crack through the thick wintery sea ice to breathe.
The obverse features a portrait of Elizabeth II with the inscription
ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA CANADA
With two small maple leaf motifs either side of 'Canada'.
The reverse bears the Bowhead whale and a calf with the inscription:
CANADA 100 DOLLARS 1988
The engraver's initials RRC are to the right of the whales.
