1987 Gold Bullion Nugget Coin - Perth Mint.
This is the first one ounce gold bullion coin issued by the Perth Mint in Western Australia, follwing on from South African Krugerrands and Canadian Maples. Each coin contains exactly one troy ounce of gold, struck in 0.9999 fineness (24 carat). The coins are issued in protective plastic capsules.
The declared mintage from The Perth Mint is 131,264.
The Gold Nugget coin series was introduced in 1986 by The Perth Mint. They had two unique features: a 'two-tone' frosted design effect, and plastic encapsulation of each individual coin. At the time, these features were unusual for standard bullion coins and gave the Nugget characteristics which made it stand apart from other gold bullion coins in the market.
In 1990, the reverse design changed to show kangaroos. Each year is different in its design, making them popular with coin collectors as well as investors.
The obverse shows the third definitive portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, by Raphael Maklouf. The inscription reads:
100 DOLLARS ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA
The reverse shows an engraving of the famous gold nugget, Welcome Stranger. It was designed by Stuart Devlin.
