These 1987 Half Ounce Gold Britannia Coin were the first 0.5 oz Britannias to be issued. This bullion coin is struck from 22 carat gold.
Britannias are British Legal Tender and exempt from Capital Gains Tax. As investment gold they are also VAT-free.
These dated gold Britannia coins are perfect for anniversaries or birthdays.
The first gold Britannia coins were issued in 1987. Prior to their introduction, The Royal Mint were experiencing a great deal of competition from mints around the world who were issuing bullion coins in troy ounces, and fractional sizes. The Britannia was introduced in order to compete with coins such as the South African Krugerrand and Canadian Maples.
The coins are avaiable in one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce sizes. The coins have a face value of £100, £50, £25, and £10 each respectively.
The obverse features the third definitive UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by Raphael Maklouf.
The text reads:
ELIZABETH II · DEI · GRATIA · REGINA · F · D · 50 POUNDS ·
The reverse bears the iconic 'standing Britannia' design, by Philip Nathan. The text reads:
1987 BRITANNIA 1/2 OUNCE FINE GOLD
