Australian Gold Nuggets

The Gold Nugget coin series was introduced in 1986 by The Perth Mint. They had two unique features: a 'two-tone' frosted design effect, and plastic encapsulation of each individual coin. At the time, these features were unusual for standard bullion coins and gave the Nugget characteristics which made it stand apart from other gold bullion coins in the market.

In 1990, the reverse design changed to show kangaroos. Each year is different in its design, making them popular with coin collectors as well as investors.

Nuggets or Kangaroos?

The kangaroo coins originally featured famous gold nuggets discovered in Australia (As seen with this coin!) on their reverse designs. In 1989, 2 designs were released; one featuring a nugget, the other showing a kangaroo. The Perth Mint decided to stick with the kangaroo designs, and so from 1989 onwards, the coins no longer feature gold nuggets. For this reason the coins are often referred to as 'kangaroos', 'roos' or 'nuggets'.

Obverse

The third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was designed by Raphael Maklouf and is featured on this obverse. The coin bears an inscription that reads as:

ELIZABETH II · 50 DOLLARS · AUSTRALIA

Reverse

The reverse side displays the 'Hand of Faith' nugget, the largest gold nugget ever discovered in Australia, weighing an impressive 875 troy ounces. This historic find was made in 1980 using a metal detector.

The text beneath the nugget reads as follows:

HAND OF FAITH 1980
