The Ancient Olympic Games

The first Ancient Olympic Games commenced in 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece and was hosted every four years in the same location until 393 AD. In 393 AD, the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, also known as Theodosius the Great, banned the Olympics.

This decision came in the wake of a tumultuous period in Greece during the 3rd century, marked by a series of earthquakes and the ongoing Second Civil War from 392 to 394 AD, which he ultimately succeeded in before his eventual death in 395 AD.

Theodosius I was the last emperor to rule the once-powerful Roman Empire, which had by then split into the Western and Eastern Roman Empires.

A Royal Performance

70,000+ people witnessed HRH Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth II's daughter, competing as an equestrian during the Montreal Olympic Games. She rode one of the Queen's personal horses. While representing the British Royals, she suffered a concussion halfway through but managed to complete the course, although she couldn't recall some of the jumps.

Obverse

The obverse showcases the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, who was 36 years old at the time, along with a Canadian Maple leaf engraved by Walter Ott and an inscription designed by Arnold Machin.

ELIZABETH II CANADA 1976

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features two ancient Greek figures, male and female, alongside a date range from 776 B.C. to 1976 A.D. The year 776 B.C. marks the inception of The Ancient Olympic Games in Olympia, Greece, while 1976 A.D. signifies the most recent Olympics at the time of the coin's engraving.
