This 1937 George VI Gold Proof 4 Coin Specimen Set has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as PF 62-63.

Own a piece of history with this 1937 specimen gold coin set! Although George VI reigned from 1936 until 1952, no sovereigns were individually issued during this period, only those as part of this specimen coin set. With only 5,501 sets minted, these coins are highly scarce and sought-after.

Each coin in this set is minted with a plain edge and is struck from 22 carat (0.9167 fine gold). The set contains just over 2 troy ounces of the precious metal.

This set consists of a quintuple, double, full and half sovereign. It is a must-have for sovereign collectors!

1937 Gold Sovereign Proof Set

In 1937, the Royal Mint issued, for the first time since 1911, a gold coin proof set. The 1937 set was issued for the Coronation of George VI following a tradition established in the early 19th century.

All four of the 1937 proof gold coins share the same design, although here are some slight differences in proportion and spacing of the motifs of the design relative to the complete flan. An observant collector may be able to tell the difference between photographs of all four coins.

Obverse

Designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget, the obverse shows a right-facing portrait of King George VI. The legend reads:

GEORGIVS VI  D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D : IND : IMP.

Reverse

The St George and the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci can be found on the reverse of the coin. The date appears at the bottom, with the initials 'B.P.' just to the right.
