1937 Gold Proof George VI Half Sovereign NGC PF63 Cameo

1937 George VI Gold Proof Half Sovereign NGC Graded PF-63 Cameo

These 1937 half sovereigns were only issued as part of the four coin gold George VI Coronation proof set. As such, it can be difficult to acquire them separately, as this would require a 4-coin set to be split. Only 5,501 of the sets were issued.

This gold proof half sovereign has been graded by NGC as PF-63 Cameo.  It's worth noting the coins are also Cameo, meaning there's a high contrast between the matte and mirror finish on the design.

1937 Gold Proof Coin Sets

George VI half sovereigns were only minted in 1937, and only as part of the four coin gold proof set of that year issued for the coronation. We occasionally have them available from sale from stock.

All four of the 1937 proof gold coins share the same design, although here are some slight differences in proportion and spacing of the motifs of the design relative to the complete flan. An observant collector should be able to tell the difference between photographs of all four coins.

Obverse

The obverse features a profile portrait of George VI facing left, with the legend (inscription):

GEORGIVS (GEORGIUS) VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D: IND : IMP.

It was designed by Humphrey Paget, whose initials appear in the exergue.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci. It features the world famous portrayal of St. George, on horseback, killing a dragon. The date 1937 appears in the exergue, and the initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci) appear to the right of the exergue.
