End of the Silver Threepence

One of the proposed coinage reforms of Edward VIII's reign (carried over to that of George VI following the abdication) was the introduction of brass threepence coins to replace the tiny silver issues which had been circulating for many years. The high cost of silver, in addition to the ease with which the tiny silver threepence got lost were factors in this decision. However, the silver issues continued to be popular in Scotland and the colonies, and so the two issues continued to be struck and circulated side by side until the end of the Second World War.
