Only the Melbourne and Perth Mints in Australia and the Pretoria Mint in South Africa issued sovereigns in 1931. The mintmark is visible on the ground above the centre of the date. This was the last year of issue for both Perth and Melbourne Mints.
1931 sovereigns have the smaller head portrait of King George V. This is the third year that this portrait was featured on sovereigns. This design was used from 1929 to 1932 inclusive, making these quite desirable from a type collectors point of view.
The obverse of the 1931 sovereign features the second smaller re-engraved portrait of George V designed by Bertram Mackennal.
The reverse of the 1931 sovereign features Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the Dragon design.
