1929 gold sovereign featuring the "small head" portrait of King George V. These coins were struck at the Perth Mint in Australia.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
The London Mint stopped issuing sovereigns after 1916, although a small number of 1917 were produced. From 1917, only the branch mints continued to issue sovereigns, and by 1923 the only the three Australian mints, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth remained producing sovereigns. The Pretoria mint in South Africa also began issuing sovereigns in 1923. The Perth mint produced 1,67,625 sovereigns for 1929, Melbourne minted 463,938 and Pretoria issued 12,24,17. This makes the 1929 Perth Mint sovereign quite scarce.
The obverse features the second, "small head" portrait of George V. The portrait was designed by Australian born, Edgar Bertram Mackennal, and features the King, bare head, facing left. The legend surrounding the portrait reads GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP: The small head portrait features on sovereigns from 1929 until 1932.
The 1929 Perth mint sovereign reverse features St George on horseback, slaying the dragon with a sword. This design has featured on the gold sovereign since 1817, with few breaks, and is the work of the Royal Mint engraver and sculptor, Benedetto Pistrucci.
The P mintmark can be seen on the ground above the centre of the date.
